How to clear Adobe Premiere Media Cache
Adobe Premiere Pro generates .cfa and .pek files to optimize audio and video playback. Over a few months, this hidden folder can grow to 100GB+.
On a Mac, the media cache lives here by default:
The manual way:
- Open Premiere Pro.
- Go to Settings › Media Cache (Preferences › Media Cache in older versions).
- Click “Delete”.
Note: Adobe suggests doing this right after you start Premiere, before you open a project.
The CacheDrop way:
CacheDrop finds the media cache that Premiere Pro, After Effects and Media Encoder share, and clears it when you confirm. No need to open Premiere.

FCPX stores render files directly inside the Library bundle. CacheDrop finds your FCPX libraries, shows how much space each one takes, and points you to the Final Cut command that strips out the render files.
That’s why a finished Final Cut Pro library can take up far more space than its source media. The render files sit inside the .fcpbundle, where Finder doesn’t show them.
Delete render files in Final Cut Pro
- Select the library in the Libraries sidebar.
- Choose File › Delete Generated Library Files.
- Select Delete Render Files, choose Unused Only or All, and click OK.
One library at a time, and only libraries you open.
Find them with CacheDrop
CacheDrop lists each Final Cut Pro library it finds with its size, so you know which ones to clean in Final Cut. It never changes a library itself.

Is it safe to clear the Premiere Pro media cache?
Yes. Media cache files are copies Premiere makes for faster playback. It regenerates them the next time you open a project, so the first playback may take a moment longer while waveforms and conformed audio rebuild.
What are .cfa and .pek files?
.cfa files are conformed audio: versions of your clips’ audio that Adobe apps can play back quickly. .pek files store peak data used to draw audio waveforms. Both are safe to delete.
Will deleting Final Cut Pro render files delete my edits?
No. Your projects, timelines and original media stay in the library. Final Cut Pro re-renders effects and transitions when it needs them again.
Why is my Mac still full after deleting old projects?
Deleting a project doesn’t remove the caches it created. Media cache files, After Effects disk cache and render files stay behind in your Library until you clear them.
Which apps does CacheDrop clear caches for?
Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects and Media Encoder, which share one media cache. For Final Cut Pro, it shows each library’s size and how to delete its render files in Final Cut. You review each item before anything is cleared.
